What is calisthenics?

Calisthenics is ...

A mix of gymnastics, dance, simplified ballet and more, calisthenics is a unique Australian team sport with performance at its heart. Through teamwork and self-discipline, calisthenics is a sport which builds self esteem and confidence, allowing your child to shine on stage and in life. 

Calisthenics is made up by the following team based items:

Rods

Manipulation of a metal rod with movement developing technical skills, hand-eye coordination, multi-tasking.

Clubs

Circular swings with wooden clubs developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, multi-tasking, rhythm.

March

Marching to create complex patterning developing spatial awareness, core strength, rhythm, deportment.

Free Exercise

A creative series of strength and flexibility movements developing core strength, flexibility, deportment.

Aesthetics

Graceful movements technically placed and interpreted developing musical appreciation, grace, poise, emotional expression.

Fancy item

One item is taken each year from a selection of 'fancy' items that are used on a rotation basis to give variety to the girls Calisthenics experience. The items included in the rotation are dependent on the age group and can include:

  • Song with Action (singing with movement & expression developing confidence, vocals, listening, communication, performance skills)

  • Song & Dance (singing with dance and expression developing dance, vocals, stamina, breathing)

  • Character Dance (series of dance steps to tell a story developing rhythm, dance, storytelling, acting)

  • Dance Arrangement (dance and interpretation developing spatial awareness, elevation, expression, performance skills)

  • Rhythmical Aesthetic (graceful and elevated movements technically placed and interpreted developing rhythm, dance, expressive storytelling, leaps & leg extension)

  • Calisthenics Revue (a creative performance to tell a story developing performance skills, acting, creative expression, confidence)

  • Stage Medley (a creative performance to tell a story with singing, dance and movement developing performance skills, vocals, stamina, breathing, acting, creative expression and confidence)
